2,000 US Troops Head East: Strength First, Then Peace

The United States is preparing to deploy between 1,000 and 2,000 troops to the Middle East, among them elements of the storied 82nd Airborne Division, as the Iran conflict continues to test the resolve of a Western alliance that cannot afford to blink. The move is not, as some reflexively comfortable voices in European capitals may prefer to frame it, an act of provocation. It is a statement of intent: that open societies are prepared to defend the conditions that make their prosperity possible.

President Trump has simultaneously signaled cautious optimism about the prospects for a negotiated settlement, with Pakistan emerging as one of the mediating channels through which preliminary signals are being exchanged. The diplomatic and military tracks are not in contradiction.

They are, in fact, the only coherent combination that has ever produced durable results in a region where gestures of goodwill unaccompanied by credible force are invariably read as weakness.

A West that deploys strength while extending the hand of negotiation is a West that understands its own history. The 82nd Airborne does not arrive as an army of occupation.
