Far Right on the March: Le Pen’s Camp Surges in French Local Elections

In the first round of France's municipal elections on March 15, 2026, Marine Le Pen's Rassemblement National (RN) notched significant advances, underscoring widespread discontent with entrenched leftist policies and bureaucratic overreach. Preliminary results from the Interior Ministry show RN candidates leading in 58 municipalities, with outright victories in several towns where they secured absolute majorities.

This steady ascent at the local level reflects a public yearning for change amid economic stagnation and security lapses under socialist-leaning administrations.

Notable triumphs include Louis Aliot's re-election in Perpignan with over 50% of the vote, alongside retained strongholds like Hénin-Beaumont, Fréjus, and Beaucaire. The party has also advanced to run-offs in key cities such as Marseille and Toulon, positioning it for potential breakthroughs.

In Marseille, a razor-thin race sees incumbent socialist mayor Benoît Payan edging out RN's Franck Allisio by about one percentage point; an RN win there would be historic, marking control of a major metropolis.

Yet, in most urban centers, traditional conservatives and leftists hold sway. Paris sees socialist Emmanuel Grégoire leading with 38%, far ahead of conservative Rachida Dati at 26%. Tight contests in Lyon and Marseille highlight the role of strategic alliances ahead of the March 22 second round.
